Cars your relatives owned when you were a kid.
What was the first one you remember?

What was your favourite then?

What would be your favourite now?

In 1981 my aunt visited U.K. for the first time in about 30 years, I knew we had a wealthy side to the family but to see a Jensen Interceptor and a silver Aston Martin DB5 parked outside 107 South Park Drive was pretty special.

Was taken for a spin in the DB5, as a 15 year old it’s stayed in my memory for ever.

Parents had a Mk2 Orion.

It was shit.

Coerced me in to buying it off them.

It got worse.

My dad had a wartburg , horrible two stroke engined Eastern European thing. Owned if for two weeks.

Had a stage of buying 2CV’s for about ten years.

His last 4 cars were all Fiats , two tipos and two of those odd looking people carrier things.

The 2CV and fiats were all bought new. He liked unusual cars.

The first car I can recall being attached to was my Grandads Mk1 Cortina, red with the round rear lights.

My favourite at the time was my Dads Truimph Herald, the way the whole front seemed to lift up spoke to me as 6 year old.

My favourite now would be the 128 Coupe because that SOHC could sing like Tenor.

My family had an old 69' Chevy Impala dull red station wagon.

It was only years later, when I worked a couple summers at a car museum that I learned what it had under the hood -
327 V-8 Turbo-Fire Powerglide

Other than that
70 something AMC station wagon
80 something Chevy Suburban (first thing I drove when I was 14)
3-ton Dodge Truck
1-ton GMC Truck

Those were the "exciting" ones. No rich relatives.

Re: Cars your relatives owned when you were a kid.

My dad went through a phase of buying 'good value for money' Fiat 124s with different badges, all made behind the iron curtain.

Lada, Polski Fiat etc etc.

To be fair when I was a kid, All that mattered to me was the colour, how comfortable it was to sit in the back and a non sporty ride as my brother was a professional travel sickness projectile vomit exponent.

I spent a lot of time in my youth in:

Escort Mk2 pop plus in beige with a red and yellow pin stripe down both sides. Classy.

Cortina Mk3 in metallic mint green. Engine ate itself spectacularly on an A road to the soundtrack of Brian Ferry if I recall.

Orion Mk2 (fucking GHIA no less - leccy windows!) in white which I borrowed a week after passing my test to go to the Reading Festival - we all survived the festival but only just.

My conclusion Ford vehicles of the 80s and 90s were a bit shit.

What saddens me a little bit is that my Dad was a bit of a car guy, but having me and my Brother put paid to that.

He's 80 this year so I have all but given up on encouraging him into a project or 'selfish' purchase of something for the garage, he is just happy to have a Zafira because it has enough seats for the Grandkids.

My late dad had a blue Renault 16, which was the first I remember. Bloody awful thing, like something out of an old Alain Delon movie!!

Then he had I think a Renault Megane and some sort of a Rover that I drove. I must confess though I quite liked his Ford Sierra at the time.

My 'punishment' for rolling my 1303 Beetle within 10 months of ownership was being 'gifted' my mums Talbot Samba in Poo brown with a deaf aid beige interior.

This coincided with a rare six month period of abstinence in my teens and early 20s. That thing was four wheeled contraceptive.

Suluki Bronze with a vinyl roof Mark 3 thought I was a millionaire at the time. As an aside I bought a matchbox replica when I was about 40. Daft old bugger that was 800 cars ago in my framed matchbox collection.

After my dad won the pools he got a Wolseley from a little old lady who'd hardly ever driven it - it was all downhill after that - a Datsun Cherry and an Austin Allegro are the only other ones I can remember!

I suspect that my parents thinking too, seeing as the things looked like the shoebox car five year olds draw.

When I moved out I eventually got a Mk2 Golf GTI.

The first car I remember in our family was an ancient Daimler with indicators that popped out between the driver and rear seats. The bloody thing kept breaking down.
